The project to build a new campus at the City of Glasgow College has been approved by the Scottish Funding Council.
Planning for the new buildings has been in the pipeline since the city’s Nautical, Central and Metropolitan colleges merged last year.
The funding deal paves the way for two facilities to be built on existing college land in the city centre and on the banks of the River Clyde.
The main Clyde teaching block there will be demolished and rebuilt, with the whole Riverside Campus due to be finished by 2015. The City Centre Campus will be completed by 2016.
Work on procurement is due to get under way shortly with construction due to begin in the summer of 2013.
Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment Alex Neil said the “substantial” funding for the City of Glasgow College is “vital for Scotland’s economy demonstrating our commitment to invest in infrastructure”.
He added: “Glasgow College is an important part of our programme to stimulate growth and support jobs, and will be delivered through the Non-Profit Distributing model, which delivers better value for taxpayers than PFI.”
Turner and Townsend’s Edinburgh office will handle project management with Gardiner & Theobald acting as client QS out of its Glasgow office.
