Five firms rewarded for cutting highways costs

Contractors Carillion, Colas, Costain, Morgan Sindall and consultant Halcrow have been named by the Highways Agency as best at driving down project costs.

Agency chiefs singled out the Aone consortium of Colas/Halcrow/Costain for finding cost savings across four MAC contracts covering about a third of the strategic network.

A joint venture Carillion/Morgan Sindall was recognised for the delivery of an upgrade to the A1 Dishforth to Leeming – a 24-mile section due for completion Spring 2012.

The firms were singled out in the Agency’s new supplier recognition scheme for their ability to drive down costs and deliver best value.

The recognition comes as the Highways Agency is searching for firms to join its next generation of asset support frameworks and is on the verge of appointing firms for the Assets Support Contracts covering areas 2 and 10 of the old MAC areas.

The agency is overhauling its existing regional asset support contracts and rationalising them down to two regional umbrella deals for the north and south of the country.

Five contractors are expected to be selected for each framework, where £637m will be spent in the north and £485m in the south over three years.

New ASFs, as they are called, will be used by the agency to cover jobs up to £15m in value which are not covered by MACs.

Both frameworks are scheduled to come into operation next Summer and run for three years.
