The system developed by south London based Castle Scaffolding is currently being used on Osborne’s £60m revamp of Twickenham railway station.

It has slashed costs on the job by allowing construction to continue during normal hours rather than waiting for the station to close and using expensive night shifts.

The move has been made possible by a complete safety netting curtain which eliminates the risk of falling objects.

The safety screen is constructed at ground level and “telescopes” up as the working height on the job increases.

Castle Scaffolding managing director Ryan Jewell said: “We have spent three years developing this system and it provides a completely safe working zone separating operatives from the public and infrastructure.

“It eliminates risk and can generate huge savings on projects where the alternative is costly possessions and night time working.”

Castle is currently using the system exclusively on its own jobs while UK and international patents are secured for the products and its methods.

Jewell said: “With the dual benefits of cost saving and improved safety we are hoping this will become standard across the industry.”
