Chancellor Sajid Javid has earmarked more than £600m to support infrastructure projects that will help to pave the way for 50,000 homes in the south east.

The fresh funding boost is coming from the Housing Infrastructure Fund pot, originally launched by Javid when he was communities secretary.

The cash will help to deliver five new road and rail projects in London, Central Bedfordshire and Essex – all areas of high demand for new housing.

Essex County Council picked up the majority of the funding allocations with over £300m for highways and rail improvements.

Five south east council infrastructure projects receiving investment boost

  • Essex County Council – £218m for the Beaulieu Station and North-East bypass bid to build a new train station and bypass near Chelmsford to unlock up to 14,000 homes.
  • Essex County Council – £100m for the Tendring Colchester Borders Garden Community bid for a new single carriageway link road and works to unlock up to 7,500 homes.
  • London Borough of Enfield – £156m for Meridian Water bid to deliver rail works, road infrastructure, land remediation, flood alleviation and utilities to unlock up to 10,000 homes
  • GLA – £81m for the ‘East London Line – Growth Capacity’ bid for transport upgrades to unlock up to 14,000 homes.
  • Central Bedfordshire Council – £70m for the Transformational Growth in Biggleswade bid for a new secondary school and transport infrastructure to unlock up to 3,000 homes.

Since HIF was launched, £1.3bn has been allocated to deliver up to 76,500 homes.

Javid said: “I want to see more homes built in the places people want to live, so more people realise the dream of homeownership.

But we need the roads, rail links, and schools to support the families living in those homes, which is why I set up a fund to put in place the infrastructure to unlock new homes in these areas.”
