High winds delay Wolves stadium roof

Buckingham Group is blaming recent high winds for a two month delay to completing the roof of the Stan Cullis stand for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The contractor started the £16m stand revamp at Molineux in May after beating Galliford Try and Sisk to the job.

Season ticket holders in the Stan Cullis stand were told the roof would be in place by the end of this month.

But the club and contractor have now written to season ticket holders to tell them the roof will not be ready until February 2012.

Supporters are able to use the uncovered lower tiers while work is going on as part of the construction plan designed to maintain Molineux’s capacity during work.

The club said high winds have hampered progress with lifting steel into place so fans will have to watch an extra four Barclays Premier League games without any completed roof in place.

Buckingham is confident of still hitting the original Summer 2012 deadline for handover of the whole stand and will be increasing working hours over the next few weeks.

The club has told local residents there will be some late night and early working across five days during the lead-up to Christmas.

The extra hours are associated with concreting and finishing the upper floors which involve concrete finishing operations running into the early hours of the night.

Kevin Underwood, director, Buckingham Group, said: “We sincerely regret the unavoidable delay and assure supporters that we’re doing everything possible to overcome the difficulties that we’ve suffered.

“Very strong winds, which aren’t always noticeable at ground level, have slowed progress significantly.

“However, we’re doing everything possible to pull time back and we don’t anticipate any delay with the Summer 2012 handover of the Stand.”

Jez Moxey, Wolves, Chief Executive, said, “Buckingham Group have been, and continue to be, a fantastic partner in the redevelopment of the Stan Cullis Stand.

“The wind related delays are unfortunate but outside anyone’s control.

“Unfortunately, these kind of issues can occur in such extensive construction projects which take place through the winter period.

“I’d like to apologise to supporters for any inconvenience this may cause and thank them for their understanding.”
