Organisers behind the Birmingham Commonwealth Games are ramping up tendering with plans to invite bids for a further £145m of work this year.

As the countdown starts to July 2022, the promoting body plans to double its workforce, recruiting 109 staff to accelerate preparations.

The Games Overlay Turnkey contracts are worth around £87m, with services needed including stands, fencing, tent structures and temporary roof structures, portable/modular buildings, groundworks, civils, internal build-out, scaffolding, pedestrian and vehicle trackways and exhibition equipment.

Expressions of interest in a market engagement for this work need to be in by 27 May.

Ian Reid, CEO of Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games said: “We know this is a challenging period for many businesses who are trying to navigate these uncertain times.

“We remain resolute as we deliver the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and most critically, we are ramping up our recruitment as well as the search for specialist suppliers who will play a vital role in the successful staging of these Games.

“There are a significant number of commercial opportunities associated with the games and we recognise the importance of these for a number of sectors.

“These opportunities will begin to be advertised through our website over the coming weeks.

“We have been working to expedite many of these contract and job opportunities to get them ready, to offer some hope and opportunity during these unprecedented times.

“We want to say to the industry that we are open for business and are ready to engage with the supply chain as well as find the best talent from the West Midlands within the job market.”
