Highways England has named its partner contractors to deliver a major programme of concrete road replacement and repair work across the country.

Full reconstruction works will be carried out by Morgan Sindall and John Sisk under a £218m five-year deal.

The firms will work on a design and build basis demolishing existing pavement and replacing it with new flexible or composite materials.

Lifecycle Extension Works worth £67m will be delivered by VolkerFitzpatrick, Colas, Dyer & Butler and Tarmac.

They will deliver specialist repairs to maximise the life of the existing concrete road surfaces of motorways and major A roads.

The project is part of a £400m programme to improve the quality of 400 miles of existing concrete roads.

Earlier this year consultants Aecom and Atkins were appointed to provide design, supervision and project management services on the programme under a framework contract worth £39m..

Most of England’s concrete roads were built in the 1960s and 70s – meaning many are now beyond their original design life and are carrying up to 25% more traffic than originally intended.

Martin Fellows, Highways England Regional Director, said: “This is the biggest concrete road renewals programme we have ever embarked on and we’re pleased to have awarded the final two contracts that will help us deliver the maximum benefits of safe, reliable and smooth journeys for many years to come.”
