Homes England and Network Rail have started the search to find a development partner to bring forward the £1bn York Central quarter.

In total the York Central Site, when redeveloped, will provide up to 2,500 homes, and around 800,000 sq ft of offices, retail and leisure as well as expansion of the National Railway Museum.

Located directly behind York Railway Station, the York Central Site extends to 45 hectares and is majority owned by Network Rail and Homes England.

The first phase of the project is expected to deliver a maximum of 650,000 sq ft of commercial space and 700 residential units.

As well as plans for new affordable homes and business premises, the masterplan drawn up by Arup and Allies & Morrison includes a new access road into the city, changes to pedestrian and cycle ways and a new entrance to York Railway Station.

An outline planning permission for the mixed-use development was granted in 2019 and subsequently a reserved matters application was approved in 2020 for £70m of first phase of infrastructure work to be carried out by Sisk.

Firms have until until 25 August to submit interests with a winning partner timetable to be appointed in October 2023.

Further information is available from the Proactis website.
