McGee has secured the job to deliver the demolition and enabling works for a £70m rebuild of an office project on Millbank close to the Houses of Parliament.

Developer Old Park Lane Management aims to dismantle and rebuild 7 Millbank in Westminster.

Mace, Skanska and Wates are understood to have been in the bidding for the main contract with a winner yet to be announced.

The current 9-storey building, which sits as part of a group of buildings that surround Smith Square, was constructed as the headquarters for British American Tobacco between 1913 and 1915.

It has previously suffered steel frame corrosion with masonry falling onto the pavement below.

Soft-stripping is anticipated to commence in August, with scheme completion being scheduled for early 2026.

In keeping with the building’s surroundings, the project will involve the careful dismantling of the existing building’s period façade so that it can be restored and rebuilt.

The new development will provide sustainable workspace with an enlarged reception, atrium and staircase, and terraces on the 6th, 7th and 8th floors to offer amenities and enhance urban greening.

The scheme will be targeting BREEAM Outstanding, WELL Platinum and a Nabers 5* rating.

Seb Fossey, Managing Director at McGee, said: “The whole McGee team is incredibly proud to have been appointed on such a prestigious scheme in the heart of London.

“We look forward to becoming a part of the local community while engaging our Carbon Engineering innovations to contribute to the sustainable credentials of the scheme.

“I’m delighted that the value we offer, characterised by the quality of our team and our ‘Total Engineering’ approach, has been recognised by such a forward-thinking client.”

Consultants to the scheme are project managers G&T, Make Architects, Waterman Structures, Hilson Moran and WT Partnership.
