Morgan Sindall has signed off a main works contractor worth ££39m to build Callerton Academy in Newcastle.

The 3-storey split-level Academy for 1,200 students will be over 8,700 m², including sports facilities with community use.

Designed by SPACE Architects it is designed to be net zero carbon in operation (NZICO)  – complete with an expansive PV green roof.

Site enabling works are advancing with Morgan Sindall expected to start working on the foundations within the next month.

Callerton Academy was first earmarked to be built by offsite specialist Caledonian Modular until it collapsed in March 2022 owing over £20m to suppliers.

Since then three schools built by Caledonia have been condemned due to concerns about the building structure.

The process put the project back nearly two years with Morgan Sindall having taken over now expected to complete the job in time for the start of 2025/26 academic year.
