Manchester developer Salboy’s building contractor Domis has started work on its 26-storey residential tower block project in the Greengate area towards the north of the city centre

The Obsidian scheme will deliver 250 flats when the project completes at the end of 2026.
The Obsidian scheme will deliver 250 flats when the project completes at the end of 2026.

Salboy’s tenth central Manchester development in seven years, the £50m-plus building project, previously known as Trinity 2 and now renamed Obsidian, will deliver 250 flats and around 1,000 sq ft of ground floor commercial space at the Trinity Way and Willam Street site.

Designed by architect Studio Power, the scheme also includes a resident’s gym, cinema room, private meeting space, and a co-working area.

The Obsidian project design team includes mechanical and electrical consultant, Novo and structural consultant, Renaissance.

The Obsidian building will comprise 31 studios, 93 one-bed flats, 111 two-bedroom apartments and 15 three bed homes.

The 221,000 sq ft site on which Obsidian will be constructed sits within Salford City Council’s Chapel Wharf Framework and has been identified as a development opportunity site.

Development on the site can be traced back to 1791 and the Salford Iron Works, one of the largest manufacturers of cast-iron products and stationary steam engines which powered mills around Manchester. The ironworks closed in the 1930s and were replaced by low-level housing in the 1970s and 1980s.
