The investment comes just weeks after four Stockton Borough Schools learnt their bids under the government’s Priority School Building Programme had been successful.

The latest round of cash will be used to create extra classroom space and improve buildings in urgent need of investment.

Initial planning for the school building projects is now under way with the majority of the work expected to take place within the next two years.

Stockton Council said it will work closely with the selected contractors to create recruitment and training opportunities for local residents and to maximise opportunities for the local workforce and companies.

Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Councillor Ann McCoy, said: “I am delighted we are now in a position to invest money in our schools, particularly following the disappointing cancellation of the Building Schools for the Future programme.

“The schools which have been allocated funding are either in areas where there is a large demand for more places or are in urgent need of building investment. This news is a welcome step towards creating the fit-for-purpose learning environments our young people deserve.

Schemes will include Junction Farm Primary which will increase by 210 places, Barleyfields Primary and St Francis of Assisi Primary.

Christ the King Primary in Thornaby and St Mark’s Church of England Primary in Stockton have also been earmarked for extensions.

Northfield School in Billingham has also been allocated funding.
