A host of famous name brands are being dumped by Balfour Beatty as part of its restructuring plans for the UK construction business.

The slimming down will see it operate as one company and the end of Cowlin, Dean & Dyball, Balvac, Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering, Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering, Balfour Beatty Construction Scottish & Southern and Balfour Beatty Construction Northern.

The move is part of an ongoing efficiency drive at Balfour which will see 650 jobs go and 35 regional offices closed.

Balfour said the move would create a “more agile, more efficient and more customer-focused business.”

Balfour spent £14m on redundancy payouts during the first half of this year with the restructure set to save £50m a year and be complete by January.

Balfour’s six operating companies will be reduced to just one.

Retained brands include Mansell, Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, Birse Civils, Raynseway Construction, Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering and Office Projects Ltd.

They will make up one company – Balfour Beatty Construction Services UK.

This will be organised around three business streams: major projects, regional and engineering services.

Mike Peasland will lead Construction Services UK as chief executive alongside:

  • Bob Clark, who will lead the Major Projects business stream as managing director supported by Stephen Tarr as executive director
  • Dave Donaldson who will lead the engineering services business stream as executive director of engineering services supported by Phil McGuire as managing director.
  • Steve Waite who will lead the regional business stream as managing director supported by Rob Walker as executive director

Support functions such as HR, finance, procurement and IT will be centralised as part of the restructure.

Balfour added: “These changes will facilitate the creation of a more integrated and collaborative supply chain to help drive innovation across the project lifecycle.”

Peasland said: “2013 will be a pivotal year for us and these changes will help us to focus even more on what we’re known for – delivering innovative, quality projects.

“Our transformed structure will help us to realise our four strategic priorities; engaging our people, becoming partner of choice, building on our trusted brand and achieving operational excellence.

“We’re looking forward to offering an even better service to our customers, partners, employees and the wider society for whom we build.”
