A shift in strategy towards infrastructure and working south of the border has been rewarded with a strong set of results at Scottish contractor Robertson.

Staff numbers at the company rose to 1,100 as turnover increased 16% to £269m and operating profit before exceptionals went up £4.3m to £5.6m for the year ended March 2012 .

Group Chairman and company founder Bill Robertson, said: “We continue to evolve the business to meet the changes in both the public and private sectors.

“Through our refocus as an infrastructure, support services and construction group we’ve managed to build on our core competencies and secured positions on several different public sector frameworks by ensuring our service and product quality is best in class.

“It is particularly pleasing to see that we continue to enjoy high levels of repeat business from a loyal client base whilst at same time developing new client relationships.”

Robertson has reduced its activity in its traditional core markets of private house building and speculative property development to focus more on defined exit property projects and the infrastructure market.

The group’s investment business Robertson Capital Projects secured the East Central Hub territory programme with a pipeline of work worth £500m.

The business also delivered two major hospital PFI projects at Stratcathro in Angus and Murray Royal in Perth.

Robertson Construction has seen sales and profit growth in the last year as it expanded its portfolio to offer mechanical and electrical building servicess.

The construction arm opened a new office in Manchester recently and now includes four regional business units working in healthcare, education and iconic Scottish industries such as whisky, oil and gas and fish farming.

Robertson Facilities Management is the largest employer in the Group with 600 staff.

It continues to deliver both turnover and profit growth and has a secured £1bn forward order book covering the next 20 to 25 years.

The house building and property development division of the Group now focues on more sustainable social housing and regeneration opportunities.

Robertson is involved in bidding on two regeneration projects in Central Scotland with a combined approximate value of £150m.

Robertson Timber Engineering is currently undertaking two major projects in the South East of England to supply the precision engineered timber frame for two new build hotels in Cambridge and Vauxhall in central London.

Robertson said: “I am delighted with the performance over the last 12 months, which has been achieved against the back drop of a prolonged and difficult banking and economic environment, with a lack of funding being a significant hurdle to new investments in both the public and private sectors.

“The commitment and drive of our excellent staff base plays a significant part in our delivery and performance.”
