The developer unveiled its plans today when it announced £50m funding for the scheme by the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Much of the building has been vacated as BBC staff are decanted to premises elsewhere in London and Media City in Salford.

Further details of the redevelopment plans will emerge next month, when consultation begins on Stanhope’s plans, which are designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.

The building complex will consist of residential, office and leisure space as well as retaining some BBC presence.

David Camp, chief executive of Stanhope, said: “We were thrilled when we secured the mandate and financial backing to redevelop the iconic BBC site, and we are delighted that RBS have seen the potential in us, and this development.
