The North East contract is worth £64m and it means that nine schools – four primary, three secondary and two special – across Durham, Gateshead, Sheffield, Stockton on Tees, Sunderland and East Riding serving 5,495 pupils will be completely rebuilt or refurbished.
Boyd McFee, Director from Sir Robert McAlpine said: “We have been working with a strong team of designers and supply chain partners for more than a year to develop our approach in readiness for the PSBP and look forward to partnering with the Education Funding Agency in the delivery of these important schools.”
The wave of nine schools is the first of eight groups of multiple school projects that have been singled out to be directly Government funded because they are deemed to be in the worst condition.

- West Cornforth Primary School (Durham)
- KIng James I Academy
- Hill Top School (Gateshead)
- Fox Hill Primary School (Sheffield)
- Prince Edward Primary School (Sheffield)
- Ian Ramsey C of E Aided Comprehensive School (Stockton)
- Usworth Grange Primary School (Sunderland)
- Goole High School (Sunderland)
In total, 42 schools will be Government funded in the Priority Schools Programme, with the rest funded by PF2.
Progress is being made on the remaining six capital funded batches. The contractors on the EFA Contractors’ Framework will be invited to tender for these batches this month and next.
