Electricity generator EDF has signed up Atkins to provide extra expert engineering support on a programme to extend the life of its existing nuclear AGR reactors.

EDF Energy is looking at extending the life of its reactors by seven years to help bridge the forecasted energy gap until new nuclear comes on line.

The utility currently operates 14 AGR reactors in the UK, at eight different sites as well as one pressurized water reactor, Sizewell B.

It’s nuclear generation arm set up a the strategic partnership with Amec, Doosan Power Systems and Babcock International to help with the programme two years ago.

Atkins has been drafted in to strengthen the team as pressure grows to extend the life of the reactors.

Stuart Crooks, Chief Technical Officer of EDF Energy’s Nuclear Generation business said: “We’re pleased to announce Atkins’ involvement in delivering our lifetime management strategy.

“Life extension will provide low carbon energy for the UK along with supporting our thriving nuclear industry and the highly skilled jobs it provides.”

Chris Ball, managing director of Atkins’ nuclear business, said: “We have worked closely with EDF Energy supporting their operating fleet for over 30 years and this is a natural extension of that relationship.

“Our primary focus as a member of the Strategic Partnership will be to support EDF Energy on their aspirations of Zero Harm, maximising output and lifetime extension.

“Atkins will be bringing its technical and programme delivery experience to the full portfolio of work being invested in by EDF Energy in their existing fleet. In addition to this we will add our consultancy experience in developing and delivering complex supply chain solutions.”

Atkins has been a tier one strategic partner to EDF Energy for the maintenance of their existing fleet of AGRs and PWR, providing more than 350 man years of support in the last three years alone. Working across the graphite core, fuel route improvement, periodic safety review and Japanese Emergency Response programmes, Atkins has provided both engineering and programme management services.

Atkins also continues to provide similar services across EDF Energy‘s nuclear new build programmes at both Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C.
