In a trading statement ahead of unveiling half-year results in August, Costain said the sharp rise from £2.4bn at the end of 2012 was driven by new contracts and extensions worth more than £900m.
A clutch of major awards announced during the first half of the year helped the contractor to buck the downward trend in orders across the rest of the contracting sector.
Costain has secured a place on Thames Water’s AMP6 investment programme.
In London, it secured the Hammersmith Flyover strengthening project as part of an Early Contractor Involvement framework for Transport for London and bagged a major contract to design, fit-out and commission the railway systems for Crossrail.
