Tax crackdown targets London contractors

Revenue inspectors are launching a crackdown in the London construction market with a target of collecting £3m in unpaid taxes.

HM Revenue and Customs have picked the capital’s construction companies as a target for the latest wave of industry task forces.

The task forces are specialist teams that undertake intensive bursts of activity in specific high-risk trade sectors and locations in the UK.

The teams visit comapnies to examine their records and carry out other investigations

David Gauke, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, said: “We are determined to support hardworking people who want to get on, but the people being targeted by these task forces have no intention of playing by the rules.

“This Government has made it clear that we will not tolerate tax evasion and we have provided HMRC with the resources to crack down on those who break the rules.”

HMRC has collected more than £90m as a result of task forces launched since 2011-12.

HMRC’s Jennie Granger, Director General of Enforcement and Compliance, said: “HMRC taskforces are deployed in sectors and areas where we’ve detected a high risk of tax evasion.

“If you have declared all your income, you have nothing to worry about. But, if you haven’t, we will find you, investigate you and not only could you face a heavy fine, but a criminal prosecution as well.”
