Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering has invested in one of the most technologically advanced piling rigs in the world.

The 106 tonnes Bauer BG30 costs £1.15m and is capable of installing piles to a depth of 64m and to a maximum diameter of 2.4m.

Mark Ingram, Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering operations director, said: “This new rig allows us to drill bigger and deeper then we have before and is also quieter, quicker and more capable than standard rigs.

This investment represents our commitment to ensuring we remain capable of delivering the complex and technically challenging foundations that our customers expect from us.”

The rig will be deployed soon on projects around the UK.

Gathering telemetrics from the new rig

Bauer BG30 advantages

One of the rig’s key advantages is its based completely on electronic systems instead of hydraulic systems, greatly enhancing the control achieved during delicate operations.

Onboard telemetrics can be monitored remotely on an iPad or similar handheld device, with the detailed data ensuring that piles can be installed with a greater degree of accuracy than before.

The rig adheres to the latest carbon emissions targets meeting the latest European and UK requirements for vehicles.

In addition, a special coating has been applied to key engine parts which help to reduce sound emissions by up to 6dB compared to older models.
