Betting Spy: They’re off – Cheltenham versus MIPIM

Next week sees the construction and property world split into two distinct camps as the Cheltenham festival and MIPIM get underway.

Whether you are packing wellys or deck shoes depends on your business.

Cheltenham attracts the more practical end of construction while Cannes plays host to an eclectic mix of developers and dreamers.

Both events should be buzzing as the market continues its fledgling recovery.

Obviously Betting Spy will be snubbing the sunny delights of the south of France and getting down with the real industry heavyweights at the festival.

You can keep your sunglasses and champagne. A gut-full of Guinness and the Cheltenham roar is the way to enjoy next week.

Those lovely people at Hewden have very kindly offered Betting Spy a place in their box on Thursday when the Ladbrokes World Hurdle is the feature event of the day.

Now picking Cheltenham winners is hard enough without the added handicap of heavy drinking.

But the World Hurdle is one of the few happy hunting grounds for favourites and Big Buck’s has a great chance of making us a few quid.

Paul Nicholls charge has won this four times already but is a decent price at 5/2 after suffering his first defeat since 2008 in January.

That run was his first since a leg injury in December 2012.

But next week’s race has always been the main target and Nicholls seems very sweet on his chances.

Main rival is the speedy Annie Power but this race is all about stamina and I can see Big Buck’s powering up the Cheltenham hill to land a few more beer tokens for the afternoon.

There are only five games in the Premier League this weekend with Chelsea v Spurs the glamour tie.

That should go to form but the prices are too skinny so let’s look across London to Selhurst Park where Crystal Palace play host to Southampton.

The Saints were on the end of a drubbing from Liverpool last week and have the look of a team drifting towards mid-table safety while their better players have one eye on World Cup places.

The last thing they need is a visit to south London where Tony Pullis and his team will be fired-up to continue their fight against relegation.

Paddy Power have priced Palace up at 23/10 for a win and I’ll be lumping on that in a bid to build up some stake money for Cheltenham.
