A rail hub set-up by a plant hire specialist has eliminated the need for 14,000 lorry journeys across central London to dispose of spoil from Crossrail.

L Lynch Plant Hire is working for the Costain Skanska joint venture delivering the Crossrail Paddington station.

The Willesden rail hub allows excavated material from Crossrail to be transported to its destination at Wallasea Island, in Essex which will become a nature reserve when works are complete.

The hub has kept 14,000 lorry journeys off the road as concerns rise in London over the safety of cyclists around construction vehicles.

Sam Reed, engineer responsible for the excavation and propping of the station box at Paddington for the Costain Skanska JV, said: “Lynch has shown fantastic vision in setting up the rail hub at Willesden.

“They continue to deliver an excellent service which helps us to meet our construction program whilst minimising the impact of our project on the environment and the people of London.”
