The National Army Museum is on the hunt for a main contractor to deliver a major revamp of its Chelsea site in London.

Project manager and cost consultant Focus Consultants will handle procurement for the scheme, known as the Building for the Future renovation project.

The project is the culmination for five years planning and will cost £23.25m.  It will involve a mixture of demolition and alteration works, structural works, and refurbishment and new-build works.

Architect BDP has designed the revamp which will see a new entrance building, atrium and full M&E refit with new interior finishes.

Existing facades will be altered and refurbished with substantial areas of new glazing by forming openings in the existing walls and the roof for windows and rooflights.

The shell and core build is expected to cost around £11m. with fit-out let as a separate job worth around £4m.

The National Army Museum aims to appoint a management contractor to start on site by December 2014, aiming for practical completion in February 2016 for the base build and July 2016 for the exhibition fit out.

It current west London site was opened in 1971 to house the national
collections of the Land Forces of the Crown, and now receives in excess of 270,000 visitors a year.

With no major building work undertaken since 1980, the expansion and upgrade plans are long overdue.

During the redevelopment the Museum will set up a programme of travelling exhibitions, Collection loans, informal and formal learning sessions and will be supporting the 2014 commemorations and the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo.
