Betting Spy: England need to learn from Germany

Some games you just watch slack-jawed in disbelief.

It’s a look I’ve perfected over the years as a West Ham season ticket holder.

Obviously the fall of Brazil on Wednesday night was one of those games.

And it took me back to a similar night of wonderment as I watched England demolish Germany 5-1 in 2001.

Sven Goran Eriksson’s side – led by Emile Heskey up front – humiliated the Germans heralding a new dawn of English football domination.

Except it didn’t quite work out like that.

The Germans launched a root-and-branch review of their game while we carried-on smug in the knowledge we were on the verge of greatness.

Fast forward 13 years and the Germans are once again in a World Cup final while we slunk home weeks ago.

Perhaps our continual grinding disappointment in the national team is not quite enough to shock everyone into action.

We might need a Brazil-style drubbing to let out everyone’s frustrations.

Now the media pundits are hailing Sunday’s final as a walkover for Germany who now seem unstoppable.

That would be the same Germany who have already drawn with Algeria and Ghana this tournament and were fortunate to get the better of the USA.

And they would be the same pundits who were hailing Brazil as favourites before kick-off.

Of course the 7-1 drubbing was stunning.

But Brazil were such a shambles my old Saturday side would have fancied their chances.

Argentina are being dismissed as one-trick ponies – stop Messi and you stop a whole country.

I’m not so sure and I think the Argentines have got the pace and trickery to trouble a German back line that has never really convinced.

Neuer in goal will have to be a bit circumspect in his “sweeper keeper” role with Messi and co on the prowl.

This looks more like a 50/50 call to me so Argentina look the value in 90 minutes at 9/4 against the 11/8 of Germany.

That’s it from Betting Spy for a while so get saving for the new football season and we’ll be back in August with a preview of where to invest your cash.
