Betting Spy: England defence is like Swiss cheese

How quickly World Cup woes are forgotten when it comes to the Premier League transfer window.

All the talk after the shambles in Brazil was of nurturing young English talent and trying to put a lid on the number of foreign players in our top teams.

Then just a few weeks later everyone is baying for more star imports as domestic players are shunted out of the door of the Premier League’s elite.

English players in the first eleven of the big two will be few and far between this season.

Joe Hart at Man City and John Terry and Gary Cahill at Chelsea look like they will be the only domestic regulars.

Can you imagine Spain only picking one player from Barcelona or Germany doing the same with Bayern Munich?

You have to feel a bit for Roy Hodgson but he has to play the hand he’s been dealt with and next up is a European qualifying campaign which doesn’t look too tricky – on paper.

We kick-off next Monday with the toughest group fixture away at Switzerland. And I fear it could be a losing start for England.

The Swiss had a far better World Cup than us and only exited at the hands of Argentina in the last 16.

All the same old England problems were in evidence in the mundane win against Norway.

Only Raheem Sterling looks capable of opening-up international opposition but we have even bigger problems at the back.

Our defence looks worryingly wobbly under pressure and I can see the Swiss scoring and taking all three points at odds of 7/4.

That should get Betting Spy back on track after our goals bet on Burnley v Man Utd last week went horribly wrong as they ground out a 0-0.

I was fed up arriving at Upton Park having done my dough in the early kick-off.

And it seemed like one of those days when all the tables were full at my favourite pre-match curry house.

Sure enough Sam Allardyce compounded my misery with another inept display as he was tactically outwitted by Southampton boss Ronald Koeman.

Earlier during Football Focus Allardyce proudly told the interviewer that people are always stopping him in London to shake his hand and tell him what a good job he is doing.

Shame Big Sam hadn’t noticed that most of them were rival fans.
