Southern Water has started to name the firms it will use in its £3bn investment programme covering 2015 – 2020

Separate Costain and Galliford Try joint ventures were revealed this morning as winners of the new Southern Water Partnership arrangement.

Framework partners

Costain in joint venture with MWH will deliver a range of schemes to maintain and improve water supply and wastewater treatment works in the eastern half of its region (Kent & East Sussex)

A Galliford Try/Imtech jv, supported by strategic design partner Atkins, will deliver maintenance and improvement schemes at water supply and wastewater treatment works in the western half of Southern Water’s area (West Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight).

Also Galliford Try, in a separate joint venture with Morrison Utility Services, will deliver Southern Water’s investment to expand and maintain its network of water mains and sewers. Support will also be provided by strategic design partner AECOM.

Costain, which has now picked up three AMP6 deals with water companies, said its share of the work is expected to be worth around £200m over the five years.

Galliford Try estimated that the water and waste water design and build work would also be worth around £200m and the pipeline works around £180m

There will also be the option for both firms to extend the framework beyond 2020 into AMP7.

Later this year, Southern Water will announce which companies will be supporting the day-to-day repair and maintenance of its network of water mains and sewers, as well as its water supply and wastewater treatment works, during 2015 to 2020.

Matthew Wright, Southern Water’s chief executive, said: “We look forward to working with our new Southern Water Partnership to plan and implement innovative ways of improving the water and wastewater services we provide.”

Andrew Wyllie, Chief Executive of Costain, said: “This is the third major contract Costain has secured in the AMP6 cycle, and provides further demonstration of our expertise in the water sector, as well as our ability to win contract extensions by entering into long term partnerships with blue chip customers.”

Southern Water has alo announced that a consortium of Veolia Water, Costain and MWH, called 4 Delivery, will start work on Southern Water’s redevelopment of Woolston Wastewater Treatment Works before the end of this month.

The £63m scheme will be in several phases. The first will be to build a temporary works to treat wastewater before elements of the existing site are demolished.

Working in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency, these temporary works will be constructed on land adjacent to the current site in Victoria Road.

They will also help to unlock nearby land for the continued development of Centenary Quay, where the HCA is working with partners to bring forward the first phases of around 1,600 new and affordable homes.

Once the temporary works is complete, construction of the new treatment plant will start – this is estimated to be in mid 2015.
