BAM stakes claim as top UTC builder

BAM Construction has picked up its 16th contract to build the new generation of University Technical Colleges.

The latest win puts it ahead of rivals as the contractor of first choice for UTC projects, which usually cost around £10m to build.

BAM has just started its latest job for the Health Futures UTC in Sandwell worth £9m.

So far around 30 UTCs have opened around the country, with a further 20 expected by 2016.

The 58,000 sq ft Sandwell building will contain four storeys of learning space for 600 pupils aged 14 to 19.

West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, Co-operative Pharmacy,  University of Wolverhampton,  and 21 other partner employers are all supporting the college which will prepare pupils for health science careers.

It will feature laboratories as well as a visualisation suite allowing use of modern technology to simulate real-world scenarios.

BAM will also create a room that will act as a hospital teaching ward, where pupils can practice their craft in realistic settings.

A tenth of the building’s energy will come from renewables, with photovoltaic cells used for solar power.

BAM construction director David Ellis said: “Our success in securing opportunities working with academies, free schools and university technical colleges in recent years shows BAM is trusted to create high quality education facilities during changing times.”

The firm won the right to negotiate the scheme when it secured the £9.3m contract to build the Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology earlier this year, a project now approaching completion.

BAM is also negotiating further UTCs at Derby and Burton.
