It plans to open 50-65 new stores a year, piling pressure onto other larger chains.
The ambitious opening programme for stores of typically 12,000-15,000 sq ft will double the number of Aldi stores around the country to 1,000 by 2021.
The discounter is also working on plans to upgrade its existing stores to boost sales and win even more customers from its big rivals.
Joint managing director Matthew Barnes said: “For the foreseeable future, 65 new stores a year is not out of the question. We think 1,000 stores is an absolute possibility.”
The plans could bring a big boost to local builders with new store contracts typically valued from £1.5m – £3m and extensions costing upwards of £300,000.
Rotherham-based PDR Construction, Birmingham-based DSP Construction Management and Warrington-based CTM Management have already secured several contracts.
