Almost three miles of platform and station tunnels have been dug beneath the streets of the capital.

Andrew Wolstenholme, Crossrail Chief Executive said: “Most people have no idea that more than 30 metres below their feet a warren of new station tunnels is being excavated across central London.”

Five of Crossrail’s central London stations – Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel – are being excavated used sprayed concrete lining’ to create new station tunnels.

Three of the remaining stations, Paddington, Canary Wharf and Woolwich, are being constructed as ‘box’ stations.

‘Box’ Stations are built using a concrete outer wall following the excavation of the entire outline of the station then the interior is constructed within the box.

Custom House is the only station being constructed at ground level. Large sections of the station are being constructed in Laing O’Rourke’s Steetley prefabrication factory, they will then be transported more than 130 miles to east London and assembled on site.
