Restructured North West contractor Seddon Solutions has announced pre-tax profits of £1.4m and a turnover of £190m in its first full-year financial results since the group was broken up two years ago.

The main building arm Seddon Construction managed to contribute £281,000 to operating profit after suffering a small number of project losses on turnover ahead 4% to £155m.

Seddon Homes maintained turnover at £32m while raising new homes sales to 191 units.

In April 2013, the £300m turnover Seddon Group announced it would divide into three separate businesses, each owned and led by a branch of the Seddon family.

Bolton-based Seddon Solutions went to the family of Christopher Seddon, who died earlier this month, and is headed by his son Jonathan Seddon as managing director.

The year to December 2014 saw the construction, maintenance and development company, which employs over 700 staff, focus on building a blended portfolio of projects.

Seddon diversified into new commercial markets delivering projects for the Co-operative Group, Muse Developments and Bolesworth Estates.

Rod Sellers, Seddon’s Chairman, said: “In the financial year to December 2014 we have concentrated on protecting the strong balance sheet with net assets of £54.3m and £3.7m cash being generated from operations.

“We have also strengthened our pre-construction team which has allowed us to secure a number of long term framework agreements, as well as continuing to remain involved in regeneration projects and to invest in land and financial support for both residential and commercial property developments.

“We are in a strong position as the sector recovers from one of the deepest recessions the country has ever seen.

“As a family-owned company we have been able to ringfence our training, when many of our competitors have slashed budgets to protect profits.

“Where many are now struggling to train to meet contract demands, we have steadily increased our workforce and are now in strong position as the market recovers.”

Novus Property Solutions, the other former group company, Seddon Property Services, which was rebranded and is now led by John Seddon’s family, near doubled pre-tax profits to £4m on turnover up 16% at £113m.

Construction plant and equipment specialist Seddon Engineering Holdings, led by John’s brother George Seddon’s family, recognised a book loss of £8.3m from turnover of £23m after a disposal connected with the group demerger process.
