Balfour Beatty has taken pole position in the April contracts league after signing an £82.5m deal with the Ministry of Defence to build a European maintenance hub for F-35 Lightning II fighters at RAF Marham in Norfolk.

The major expansion project involves building three new facilities: an integrated training centre; logistics operations centre; and maintenance and finishing hangar.

According to information specialist Glenigan, Willmott Dixon came in second place over the month with a mixed bag of 15 contracts worth around £141m. The biggest project in their haul was a swimming pool and ice rink complex in Romford worth £25m for the London Borough of Havering.

Among the other big wins last month Morgan Sindall picked up a £30m mixed development scheme for Bournemouth Borough Council

The 12-month rolling league table saw Galliford Try continue to battle it out with lead contractor Kier with £230m of work separating the two at the top of the rankings.

On the civil engineering side, Balfour Beatty continues to hold the top slot with £1.1bn of new work, now more than twice that secured by the building side of the business.
