Oxford United plans first UK all-electric stadium

Oxford United have unveiled plans to build the first stadium in the country powered solely by electricity.

The club would use a low-carbon energy supply to create its ‘all-electric’, 16,000-seat stadium.

After an extensive site search, Kidlington five miles to the north of the city centre, has been identified as the only viable available site for the new home of Oxford United.

Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet has given consent to lease this proposed Triangle site in Kidlington for the club.

The stadium will be built as a single complex and include a 180-bed hotel, restaurant, conference centre, health and wellbeing space and a community plaza.

Around 3000m² of solar panels will be fitted to the roof, with air source heat pumps supplementing energy demand within the complex.

The northern part of the building, next to the new plaza, will have a range of retail, restaurant and community spaces, including the Club Shop, sports bar and restaurant.

Oxford United Football Club chief executive Tim Williams said: “With our right to use the Kassam Stadium coming to an end in 2026 and no option to renew the lease, we must find a new home.

“The club is committed to developing a proposal that is highly sustainable and community-focused. The further detail we have released today shows how seriously we take these principles, and I am delighted to share the first glimpse of our stadium with the whole of Oxfordshire.

“I hope everyone from Kidlington, the surrounding areas and across the county will come to the exhibition and take a look at the plans.

“We want to hear all your feedback.”
