French power company EDF has opened the tendering process to find a engineering contractor to build two turbine halls for Hinkley C nuclear power station in Somerset.

The contract is to cover the procurement, manufacture, on-site supervision, commissioning and possibly the erection on site of the equipment.

Under the contract framework, one turbine hall is to be supplied for the proposed new Penly EPR plant in France and two turbine halls for the proposed two-unit Hinkley Point C plant, although it may be extended to other potential new plants in the UK.

Each contract will run for 10 years from the date awarded and the deadline for prequalification is 29 October.

The turbine engineering firm will need a good track record in the design and the supply of the main equipment for high output nuclear power stations.

EDF said that the turbine halls will each operate with a thermal output from the nuclear island estimated about 4500 MW thermal. The gross output to be provided by each unit is around 1750 MW, the company confirmed.
