Murphy has taken a major step into the Australian infrastructure market taking a 40% stake in Sydney-based contractor Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure.

The strategic investment gives Murphy a foothold in the fast-growing Australasian region as part of its ongoing push to diversify internationally.

Abergeldie, a privately owned contractor founded in 1994 by husband and wife team Mick Boyle and Robin Craig, specialises in complex transport, water and energy projects.

Last year it turned over £350m and employs more than 800 people across Australia and New Zealand.

The deal is seen as a launchpad for Murphy’s expansion into the ANZ market, following a similar strategy used to establish itself in North America. It marks Murphy’s first move into the southern hemisphere and builds on previous international growth through partnerships and acquisitions in Canada and the US.

John Murphy, chief executive officer, said: “Having expanded into North America in recent years, this investment marks the latest step in our plans to extend our geographical reach while remaining focused on our commitment to improving life by delivering world-class infrastructure.

“We are very positive on the outlook for the Australian market and I am looking forward to working with the Abergeldie team to help them deliver on the next exciting stage of their growth plans, building on the great work they have done over the past thirty years.”

Abergeldie chief executive officer, Mark Bruzzone, said: “This partnership with Murphy is a significant milestone, providing Abergeldie with valuable strategic and technical expertise to support our continued growth and diversification in Australia and New Zealand.

“This will equip Abergeldie with additional technical capabilities to enhance the delivery of larger projects to our valued clients, setting the foundation to enable us to continue to build better communities now and into the future.”

The transaction is expected to complete in May. Murphy entered Canada a decade ago through a joint venture with Surerus Pipeline and expanded into the US in 2023 by acquiring WHC Energy Services. The move into Australia now completes a key phase in its global expansion strategy.
