Betting Spy: Much Moore style in Bobby’s day

Not so long ago Stoke v West Ham would have been talked about as a clash of styles.

Not any more I’m afraid with most of the football set to be played by the men in red-and-white stripes if the Hammer’s woeful away performances are anything to go by.

I was getting a bit nostalgic on Monday as the Bobby Moore tributes rang out around the Boleyn.

A classic photo of Moore in his World-cup winning pomp was looking down from the stands as some of his West Ham team mates were invited onto the pitch.

I couldn’t help wondering what the great man would make of the current team and playing style.

The game is supposed to have got technically better and more exciting,

But I wasn’t so sure after watching old footage of Moore playing his way out of the back before seeing Big Sam’s boys hoofing the ball upfield.

Of course some modern players are thrilling to watch – even when Gareth Bale is breaking your heart with a last-minute winner.

He is on fire at the moment and it would have been great to see how someone like Moore coped with a player like Bale.

Unfortunately the current crop in claret and blue couldn’t and he secured all three points thanks to a moment of brilliance and some bizarre substitutions by Sam Allardyce.

Enough of this reminiscing – it’s time to try and actually pick a winner this week.

As the rather embarrassing running total below shows I’m yet to lift a penny off the bookies this year.

I haven’t suffered a dry spell like this since one awful night at Romford dogs when I went through the 13-race card without a sniff.

I like the look of goals in the Spurs v Arsenal game on Sunday which has traditionally been a very open affair.

Paddy Power is offering 7/2 on over 4.5 goals and that could deliver with two teams set to go at each other from the whistle.

Betting Spy is taking a break for a couple of weeks while I head off on holiday to Chile.

I can just about justify filing construction stories but I’m not sure my wife will want me cooped up indoors tapping out betting tips while the wilds of Patagonia wait outside.

Have fun if you’re off to Cheltenham and Long Run looks a big price in the Gold Cup at 7/1.
