A joint venture between property developer Downing and the university is proposing the scheme which will provide a home home for the School of Film, Music & Performing Arts and School of Art, Architecture & Design.

The building, designed by architect Hawkins Brown will become a gateway to the planned Leeds Innovation District.

The flagship building will be home to 1,850 students and staff, who are currently spread across various separate locations in the city.

The development has been five years in the planning and if the project is given the go-ahead, it is hoped work will start in September, with the building expected to open in 2020.

Professor Paul Smith, deputy vice chancellor, said: “Submitting for planning approval for our creative arts building is a significant step in our plan to enhance our teaching and research facilities with 21st century accommodation for the Northern Film School, performing arts, music technology and fashion.”

George Downing, chairman of Downing Developments, said: “We are excited to be working with Leeds Beckett again, building on the success of the partnership that delivered the award winning Broadcasting Place development.

The proposed building forms a major part of the University’s £200m campus development plan, which will be delivered over the next five years.
