The private contractor, which celebrates its £140th anniversary this year, also pushed turnover passed the £1bn barrier, according to accounts filed with Companies House for the year to 31 October 2009.
McAlpine’s performance won a boost from high profile sports stadia projects. It is well on course to complete the 80,000-seater main stadium for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and completed the National Indoor Sports Arena and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.
Sir Robert McAlpine’s parent company, Newarthill, said group turnover, excluding its share of reveune from joint ventures, fell 8% to £1.56bn.
In contrast to the success of its construction work, McAlpine’s property business had a bad year. Including its shares of joint ventures and associates, turnover at the division fell from £45m to just £1.3m.
Net cash at Sir Robert McAlpine was £92.3 million at the end of October.
