Betting Spy: Seville to profit if Derby jinx strikes Queen

It’s Derby Day this weekend and a chance for the great British public to get plastered in the sunshine while a few horses thunder past in the background.

A trip to Epsom unveils our country’s wonderful class system in all its glory sprawled across just a few square miles of turf.

The Queen’s Stand is the place to posh it up with Morning Dress still required for “gentlemen”.

It’s always good sport to see the chinless classes sweating away in their top hat and tails while shuffling in the champagne queue.

No such worries on the famous Hill where the smell of burgers and fried onions is all pervading and the constant sound of lager cans cracking highlights the crowd’s priorities.

You certainly see a few sights in the free seats with tattoos, towering heels, Topshop’s finest and fake tan the order of the day as the crowd gets stuck into a hard days boozing.

And it’s the sauce that unifies both sides. At the end of the day the only difference between the two groups as they sway home is better clothes and a more expensive hangover.

But enough about the spectators – who’s going to win the race?

Well it was a one horse race until yesterday when the favourite Carlton House – owned by the Queen – had an injury scare.

Her Maj’s mount is going to run but the odds have drifted from a rock-solid 5/4 to a shaky 9/4.

I’m still keen on Carlton House who looked like a Derby winner all the way in his last outing so let’s have a go on the favourite and an each-way saver on Seville at 6/1 in case the Royal injury is worse than feared.

Betting Spy ended a fairly mediocre season with a couple of long-term winners as Man Utd won the Premiership and Barcelona the Champions League.

And I see no reason to desert a winning formula so let’s lump on the pair in a double to do exactly the same with Man Utd 15/8 to dominate domestically and Barcelona 5/2 to rule Europe.

That little double pays a tasty 9/1 which could look like a steal this time next year.

Sir Alex Ferguson will strengthen his side while Chelsea’s managerial merry-go-round will scupper their chances and Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool won’t be strong enough.

Barcelona meanwhile are simply playing a different game to everyone else.

Betting Spy will be back regularly for the 2011/12 season with the occasional column covering the Summer’s major sporting events.

Before I sign-off it’s time for the highlight of the season.

They were few and far between as a West Ham fan but the eventual sacking of Avram Grant has to be up there.

Finally seeing Mr Motivator slope away from Upton Park was an image I’d waited months for.
