Betting Spy: Goals the call at jittery Arsenal

This Arsenal situation is getting out of hand now – and it’s almost unbearable to watch the Gunners’ “defence” in action.

The back four’s display against Blackburn last week would have had George Graham and Don Howe spitting out their cocoa.

Back in Graham’s day the Arsenal back four was a legendary red wall.

Tony Adams was the leader back then and his keen approach to a few lagers after the game would be frowned on by Wenger and his team of sports scientists.

But I’m sure Adams with a skinful could do a better job than the current crop who defend set pieces like rabbits in the headlights.

Once other teams in the Premiership smell blood it’s all over and Arsenal can expect plenty of balls into the box from Bolton this Saturday and Kevin Davies will look to bully the centre backs.

But Bolton are going through a wobbly patch themselves and have conceded 13 goals so far this season.

So I can see this game turning into a goal-fest and Paddy Power’s offer of 3/1 on over 4.5 goals looks like the way to go.

Meanwhile down under at the Rugby World Cup the England boys are stuttering a bit – but still winning.

Now that’s a real skill to have in tournaments and I fancy us to get better and better as the event rumbles on.

We’ve also been sharpening our passing skills with a little light dwarf tossing and Ireland’s stunning victory means the draw is now looking very kind with no southern hemisphere opponent until the final.

Regular readers of this column will already be on England to reach the final at 5/1.

But there’s still a bit of value in predicting an England/New Zealand final at 10/3 in the hope that our performances so far are dwarfed (sorry) by a concerted push towards the grand prize.
