Betting Spy: Spain to inflict more pain on weak England

It’s not often you see England available of odds of 7/2 to win at home.

But you could treble that price and I still wouldn’t be interested when the visitors are the World Champions and one of the greatest sides to play the game.

Spain have travelled with a virtually full-strength squad and I cannot see one England player who would get in their side.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll pull on my England shirt with the best of them in the pub willing our boys to win through a haze of lager-fuelled bravado.

But this is the hard world of international football and I fear England and Spain are operating in different leagues.

It may only be a friendly, but this Spanish side are ruthless and will look to get one over on our boys in the run-up to Euro 2012.

England are usually worth a goal or two at Wembley. But injuries and suspensions mean we are choosing up front from Gabby Agbonlahor, Darren Bent, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck and Bobby Zamora.

That’s hardly a line-up to give Carlos Puyol and co sleepless nights.

In the middle of the park it’s a given we’ll be outplayed by Xavi and Iniesta who are peerless in the modern game.

Let’s hope Scott Parker has a decent breakfast because he’ll certainly be covering a few miles in the afternoon.

And then there’s the back line trying to keep out Villa and whichever superstar is playing alongside him.

Players like Phil Jagielka and Joleon Lescott are journeymen in this company and I can’t see them keeping the red wave at bay for too long.

Spain are a shade of odds-on to win the game so let’s take the chance that they strike early with the 15/8 available from Paddy Power that Spain are winning at half time and full time.

It’s never nice to back against your own team but betting is a ruthless game and it pays to be on the side of class in an uneven contest.

And any money you do make I’d lump straight back on Spain to win Euro 2012 at 5/2 because that price will look ridiculously generous come the day of the final.
