VolkerStevin will pump hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sand on to the North Wales coast to create a new family beach in Colwyn Bay.

Work is set to start next month as part of a £13.5m revamp of the town.

VolkerStevin will spray hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sand onto Colwyn Bay’s waterfront from an offshore barge.

The sand will then landscaped by bulldozers to form a new 800 metre stretch of beach which is 50 metres deep to the West of Porth Eirias.

The project will create the first dry beach available to motorists travelling on the A55 from the north west of England to North Wales.

Developer Bay Life+ spokesman Rupert Moon said: “The creation of a new family beach is a key part of transforming Colwyn Bay’s waterfront, for everybody to use and enjoy for years to come.

“Once complete, and with the opening of the new Porth Eirias watersports centre and restaurant, those living, working and visiting the town will be able to enjoy Colwyn Bay’s fantastic waterfront in a way that they have not been able to for a generation.”

The new beach also forms part of a scheme to improve the town’s coastal defences.

VolkerStevin has already built a new promontory and breakwater created, existing seawalls repaired and a new seawall created.
