Balfour Beatty is once again leading the 12-month contracts league after Kier enjoyed a brief two month spell at the top.

Now just £19m of orders separates the two contractors in a neck and neck race to be crowned 2014 contracts league champion.

Judged by work won over 12 months Kier currently ranks as the country’s most successful builder, followed by Mace and then Interserve.

Balfour Beatty leads the way on civils work, chased by Costain and then rival Carillion.

This month’s October league table was dominated by the formal signing of the £500m extension of the Northern Line in London.

Laing O’Rourke and joint venture Spanish partner Ferrovial share the honours at the top with the single civils award.

Over the month, Willmott Dixon ranked as the most successful builder, helped by a £40m visitor centre at Hadlow College and a £34.5m school in Llandysul for Ceredigion County Council.

Among the other big building contracts Winvic raced off with a £50m deal for Sports Direct to build a distribution centre in Mansfield.

On the civils side Morgan Sindall also landed a £90m three-year cabling/excavation deal across the east Midlands for Western Power Distribution.
