The four-year deal, awarded through National Grid’s EPC framework, forms a key element of the Great Grid Upgrade programme and will increase transmission capacity on the network.
Under the contract, Balfour will design and install an extension to the existing substation, creating connections for four new circuits, including two new grid supply points and two shunt reactors to improve network reliability and efficiency.
The contractor will also install new gantry structures to accommodate overhead line connections and deliver the monitoring, control and protection systems needed to operate the expanded facility.
Around 150 people will be employed on the project at peak, including apprentices and graduates.
Tony Wilson, managing director of Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission & Distribution business, said: “This latest award builds on our continued work across East Anglia to strengthen and modernise the UK’s electricity network infrastructure.
