Kier has walked off with the industry’s biggest annual haul of contract wins for the second year running.

The firm romped to the top of the 2015 contracts league with 258 project wins, totalling around £2.7bn, according to information specialist Glenigan’s rankings.

In past years, the contracts league has proved a closely contested race between Kier and Balfour Beatty. But 2015 saw a big shake-up in the top five rankings as Balfour Beatty slid to sixth place, and Bouygues UK soared up the tables to come second after a record year of wins for the French contractor.

Laing O’Rourke’s focus on major projects lifted it to third place with 31 contracts, valued at £2.2bn.

Vinci came out as top performer for civils work alone in 2015, followed by Balfour Beatty and Costain. The top three building contractors mirrored the same order as the overall table.

As the year improved the amount of work won by the industry’s top 100 contractors rose 55% to £43.2bn. At the same time the industry biggest 100 spending clients raised their investment by a third to just over £25bn.

The Department for Transport now weighs in as the industry’s biggest client supplanting last year’s biggest spender, the Department of Health, while Legal and General took the title as biggest private client from last year’s winner Stanhope.
