The contractor has signed an early contractor involvement deal with SSEN Transmission for design and buildability support on the Peterhead site in Aberdeenshire.
EGL3 is being developed by SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission and is billed as the UK’s biggest ever electricity transmission project.
The 2GW, 525kV high-voltage direct current link will run for around 680km between Peterhead and Norfolk using onshore and subsea cable.
BAM will now help shape the converter station and associated civil engineering works ahead of a main works award due in 2027.
That next package will cover detailed design and construction of buildings, access roads, drainage and other infrastructure needed before HVDC equipment can be installed.
Adrian Collins, director at BAM UK & Ireland, said: “We’re so pleased to be continuing our work on Eastern Green Link, helping to distribute valuable renewable energy from Scotland to England. Our ECI agreement marks a significant step in that process, which will deliver critical infrastructure for the Peterhead converter station.”
BAM was appointed last year to deliver civils on Eastern Green Link 2 in partnership with Hitachi Energy.
The proposed project’s converter station site in Scotland, at the Netherton Hub, has received planning in principle. Subject to approval, construction is due to begin in 2028, with the link expected to be energised in 2033.
