The race is now on for colleges to spend their funding of around £225,000 on improvements in time for the start of the academic year in 2011. (see list below)
The cash is a sop for cuts that caned more ambitious building plans when the Learning and Skills Council’s funding was cut.
Around 16 colleges will get extra Government funds taking their totals up to £1m.
The bids needed to show that the building projects could be completed by September 2011.
Some colleges have received funding based on attracting private finance, which may see larger schemes coming forward later.
Mr Cable said: “In allocating this £50m funding, we have seen some impressive bids come in for ambitious and innovative projects from colleges that are planning for the future.
“Helping colleges modernise their facilities will give them a much-needed boost at a time when education could not be more important and I am glad we have been able to provide them with this support.”
The grants were awarded on the basis of the condition of college facilities, the benefits to learners and ability to regenerate local communities.
