Construction adviser Faithful & Gould has started the procurement race for the £30m job to demolish several student blocks built in the late 1960s to be replaced with four new buildings and a series of town houses.
An extensive refurbishment programme will also be carried out under a separate long term programme of works.
The university plans three phases of construction in 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15, each being around 12 months long with the new accommodation scheduled to completed in time for the start of the following academic session.
The first phase of construction will involve building accommodation to decant students into as buildings are sequentially demolished.
New accommodation will be built as flats of up to 10 bedrooms sharing a living/kitchen area.
But accommodation on the Alexander Court site will comprise town houses and shared family flats. The project scope also includes utility infrastructure and landscaping works at each location. BREEAM Excellent is being targeted for all new developments.
