The scheme – known as Exhibition Centre Liverpool – will consist of an 80,000 sq ft hall space plus support, circulation and servicing areas.

It is anticipated that a contractor will be appointed by September, with works starting in autumn 2013.

The ECL will be located next to ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena in the Kings Dock and is planned to open early in 2015.

There are also plans to build an interconnected high quality hotel of up to 200 rooms as part of the project, subject to the outcome of a separate procurement exercise to select a hotel partner.

Liverpool Council is also considering breaking the projects into two jobs, with the design and construction of ECL estimated at £35m and the hotel £22m.
