The government today named the first academy schools to get the go-ahead under its £820m Targeted Basic Need programme.

The cash will go towards building 41 new schools and expanding over 331 more.

Now sponsors have been announced for 39 of the planned new schools. This means local councils can proceed with plans and to take them through procurement.

Carillion and BT are among the businesses sponsoring the 39 new school projects, which are due to be completed by 2015.

The programme will create more than 70,000 additional school places by 2015.

Schools Minister David Laws said: “Today’s announcement is a key milestone in our multi-billion pound plan to ensure there are enough high-quality school places around the country.

“The sponsors we have announced today are top-performing organisations that will use their expertise and know-how to ensure young people receive the high-quality education they deserve.”

The extra cash was announced in the autumn statement and is targeted to provide additional support to those local authorities experiencing the greatest demand for places.

Local authorities will be responsible for procurement but also have the option to use the Education Funding Agency’s framework or SCAPE.
